Portraits A-M
Since 1993 volunteer artists have donated their time and talent to paint more than 600 portraits of innocent victims of random violence across the country. Lost Dreams on Canvas preserves the memories of the children by capturing their lives on canvas.
Let’s hope that these deaths can serve to help our society put an end to this kind of incomprehensible tragedy.
May the sun break out again from behind the clouds and give comfort to the families and friends of these souls and all the innocent young victims of violence that now live on eternally in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved them, and also to all others in our world who value , happiness and livig a meaningful life.

10 year-old Faheem was a bright -third grade student at Pierce Elementary School in North Philadelphia. Faheem was polite and gentle and he always impressed other people who knew him. He was an A+ student, a leader in his class, and his teacher called him a real “peacemaker.”
On the morning of Feb. 11, 2004, a gun battle between warring drug dealers erupted outside Pierce Elementary and spilled into the schoolyard. The gunfire unleashed a blizzard of nearly 100 shots in the area as children were arriving for school. One of the bullets struck Faheem in the face as he walked through the gates to school. 5 days later he died.
Patricia Arnold remembers the message to her son Faheem, when she sent him off to school on Feb. 11, 2004 - the same admonition she has given to all her children for years. "Watch out for the cars, watch out for strangers, and if somebody's shooting, duck," Arnold said.
Three days after the shooting police charged two gang members with Faheem's murder. Lawyers for his family sued a local gun dealer suspected of selling the very gun that killed Faheem. See less

She usually worked and went home, but this night Jailene agreed to be the designated driver for her friends. The night she was murdered she had only planned on being at the bar for 20 minutes - that's when an altercation broke out.
The perpetrator is accused of opening fire after he was kicked out of the bar when he was told that he would be unable to use a pool table because a league was playing. After getting into a tussle with a bouncer, a group of three men were forced to leave after which one member went to get a gun from their car.
More than a dozen shots were fired at the front of the bar from a distance of less than 200 feet away, reportedPhiladelphia Police Inspector Scott Small. As a barrage of bullets flew, Holton, who was standing at the back of the bar was struck in the head and she fell to the ground. She died later at Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital.

One night Timothy stayed overnight at a friend's home. Late that night they walked to a corner store for some snacks. They were ambushed and shot and killed execution style. One of the people they were with was the intended target. Sadly, Timothy was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Everyone loved Yohannon and considered him like their brother. He was a good spirit who wanted the best for you no matter who you were. He was always helping others, always outgoing and friendly. He was known to be an angel of mercy in a time of need. He would get up in the wee hours of the morning to help someone in need. He had a personality out of this world and had the ability to talk to anyone.
He cherished his family more than anything else. He was a good son, a loving father to his 2 year old son and a brother to many.
Yohannon was a hard worker who believed in working for what he wanted. He did not have much, but would give you the shirt off his back. He loved cars, and attended Automotive Training Center and wanted to be an automotive mechanic. He had a training internship at MAACO where he was known as a hard worker and was admired for the respect he showed to others.
His dreams came to an end when his life was taken early by a senseless act. He was with a friend when he got a call from someone who needed his help. As usual, he drove out to help them. Around 11:30pm on December 7 2014, Yohannon was murdered, shot multiple times as he sat in his car.
He is dearly missed, but still lives on in the hearts of his family and many friends.

She was very close to her family. More than anything, she loved her children Zaki and Zakirah. They meant the world to her. Rose loved fashion and enjoyed looking good – she never had a bad day. Every day she had a different fashion style. Rose became involved with a man who had become jealous and overbearing and started stalking her –she began to feel that she needed to break up with him. When her grandmom became ill, Rose took her to the hospital and called her parents who had just moved to Florida to tell them. When she finally went home to rest and prepare for her parents visit, the “boyfriend” came to the house and was sitting on the steps, waiting for her. She invited him in to tell him that she was breaking up with him, whereupon he slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times, then he set her house on fire and took her car. A tragic end to a very beautiful life. Rose’s family has created “Rose’s Journey” a non-profit organization dedicated to the advocacy of children and families affected by domestic violence.

On their way back home, a drunk driver/drug addict hit them head on. Syherah was killed on impact along the puppy. The driver was so drunk he didn’t even know what happened. He was arrested and died 3 days later in jail. Syherah will live on in the mind and hearts of all her knew and loved her.

Larry was a kind, generous and outgoing young man. Wherever he went he always made new friends because of his friendly personality. He had a laugh that was contagious. He was affectionately known as “Larryspades” because of his love for writing music. He wanted to become a musician and use his music to take a stand against violence. He was also studying criminal justice at Montgomery County Community College.
Larry was like a dad to his younger brother, Keenan. They were great friends. They did everything together. He dropped Keenan off and picked him up from school everyday.
Larry’s friends continue to watch over Keenan. They take him to school everyday. They take him out bowling to dinner and on trips to Atlantic City.
Larry was shot multiple times around 10 pm on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at this apartment complex in Philadelphia where he had been residing since January. When you think of Larry all you think about is his bright and beautiful smile. His friends and family miss him so very, very much. See less

Lenora Kuong was a beautiful young lady who worked as a folk dancer and musician in her family’s performance troupe. She choreographed many of the dances and sewed traditional outfits of bright satin and sequins. Lenora was also an honor student at Temple University studying international business management.
She was engaged to the owner of the video store where she was helping out when a gunman walked in and aimed right at her. She was shot once in the chest with a .38 caliber semi-automatic weapon. The Kuong family had decided to come to America because of its promise that hard work and good education would be rewarded. She survived the “killing fields” of Cambodia, her home country, only to be shot down in the “killing fields” of our urban streets.

Police say a bat smashed Sean's head and a bullet severed an artery. Reports are that after the beating with the bat, the gathered crowd chanted, "Shoot him, shoot him." Later that night, one of the perpetrators would brag at a party that he broke his bat over Sean's head. A broken bat was found at the scene.
Sean coached little league and attended North Catholic High School. Ironically he had nothing to do with the fight that led to his tragic murder

On January 16, 1997, he was driving on a deserted stretch of road off the 405 freeway in California. When Ennis stopped to fix a flat tire on his car, Mikail Markhasev pulled up and shot him in the head.

She enjoyed cooking and was known for her fried chicken. She especially loved her young son Kenyata.
On Saturday night, November 12, 2005, a young woman picked Audra up at home. Sunday morning she was found behind a white Cadillac on Earp Street. She had been shot in the head multiple time.The murder is still unsolved.

During the early morning hours, Rashay had taken his girlfriend to work and returned home. Neighbors reported hearing an argument, then gunshots, then saw 3 or 4 men getting into a red car. When law enforcement arrived, they found that not only was Rashay’s apartment on fire, but also found him lying in the hallway outside of his apartment. He had been shot three times in the head and twice in the arms. Law enforcement theorize that when Rashay returned home he surprised the men who may have been burglarizing the apartment. It is also assumed that the apartment was set on fire to hide the evidence. The case remains unsolved.

She attended University of the Sciences where she was in the Pre-Med program. But then she met her boyfriend who was a bad influence on her.
Her dream had been to become a medical doctor. In spite of having 2 young children and an abusive boyfriend she pulled herself together and was able to get accepted into Medical School. She had just been accepted into Temple Med School and was so very excited to follow her dream. She felt happy and wanted to have her abusive boyfriend out of her life.
He would beat her. She had been seeking guidance from Holcomb Behavioral Health System regarding a strategy to good safely exit and abusive relationship. But before she could carry out a plan she was found murdered at 30th Street Station. She had remained in a car for 11 days before anyone found her. Then they found the suspect.
The family misses her very much and works diligently for justice for Nadia.

Unfortunately, Steven did not want the responsibility of supporting a family. In July 2005, Latoyia was reported as a missing person. In August, Latoyia's remains were found in Chester when Steven was caught by Philadelphia Police trying to move her body.

Jordan was raised by his mother Lucia McBath in suburban Atlanta from the time he was three years old. He loved his mom like only a single child can – as her proud, fiercely possessive young man. “We taught him to understand that his actions ripple outward, that they affect other people, so be accountable.” His father Ron was a doting dad who took Jordan every other weekend. Jordan had recently moved to Florida to live with his dad. He had a hard time adjusting at first at Samuel W. Wolfson High. But by the start of junior year his mood and grades had picked up sharply.
He made a pack of friends, aced the statewide tests and became the de facto mayor of the school. "Anything he wore, people would copy; he put a part in his hair, they copied that, too," says Aliyah Harris, his ex-girlfriend, 18, who's been accepted to Clark Atlanta and Florida Atlantic universities. She had as much to do with raising his game as any of the adults in his life. "I told him to get a job – I've got three of 'em myself – and start getting your head right for college. Jordan was a star and everyone knew it. He was a High school junior with hopes of becoming a Marine.
At 17 years, Jordan Davis died with his back to his killer. He will not graduate college. He will not marry the love of his life. He will not become a father.
On November 22, 2012, Jordan Davis went Black Friday shopping with three friends. After shopping, Jordan and his friends were hungry, so they drove to a gas station to pick up some snacks. While waiting for friend Tommie to run into the store, Jordan’s favorite song came on the radio, so he turned the music way up.
Then Michael Dunn pulled up next to them in his car. Hi girlfriend ran into the store to buy wine. Dunn cracked his window and told the boys to turn the music down. They refused. Dunn stated he saw a shotgun pointed out the window, so he opened fire. Tommie yelled “Duck” and pulled out as fast as he could while bullets winged by. Tommie drove into the adjacent shopping plaza and jumped out to check on his friends. Jordan was slumped over. The first three shots had gone through his door, two of them lodged in his chest. He gasped for air as the three friends shrieked for help. He died moments after he got to the hospital, where doctors tried mightily to revive him.
Police found Dunn the next day 160 miles away in a hotel with his girlfriend. They took him into custody. No gun was found in the car with the boys. Dunn admitted killing Jordan in self-defense. In October, 2014, Dunn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Jordan Davis and an additional, consecutive 90 years for the attempted murders of Tevin, Tommy and Leland.

When Trayvon started high school, his goal of playing professional football was put aside in favor of a career working with airplanes. Martin wanted to fly or fix planes and in the summer of 2009, enrolled in "Experience Aviation," a seven-week program which introduced him to aviation. The program director said Martin was a polite youth who enjoyed flying and had an interest in football. After he graduated from the program, he spent the summer as a volunteer, helping out new students in the aviation program. According to his parents, Trayvon had hoped to attend the University of Miami or Florida A&M University. In February 2012 Trayvon had been staying with his father's fiancee at Twin Lakes, a gated townhouse community in Sanford Florida. On the evening of February 26, George Zimmerman , a neighborhood watch captain, observed Trayvon as he returned to the Twin Lakes housing community after having walked to a nearby convenience store. Zimmerman had been driving through the neighborhood on a personal errand. At approximately 7:09 PM, Zimmerman called the Sanford police non-emergency number to report “a suspicious person” in the Twin Lakes community. He is instructed not to get out of his SUV or approach the person. Zimmerman disregards the instructions. Moments later, neighbors report hearing gunfire. A violent encounter took place between Martin and Zimmerman, which ended when Zimmerman fatally shot Martin 70 yards from the rear door of the townhouse where he was staying. Zimmerman acknowledges that he shot Martin, claiming it was in self-defense. Trayvon's body was taken to the morgue, where he was tagged as a John Doe, as he was not carrying any identification. His father, Tracy Martin, called to file a Missing Persons report early on February 28 and police officers arrived at his fiancée's condo with photographs of his dead son about 9:20 am. After Mr. Zimmerman was acquitted, Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin have taken a higher profile, drawing praise from President Obama for handling a difficult situation with grace. Together, they are pressing the federal government to consider federal civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman, and they are waging a campaign to amend expanded self-defense statutes like the one in Florida, known as “Stand Your Ground” laws, that extend beyond the home the right to use force in a dangerous situation. “My message to you is, please use my story, please use my tragedy, please use my broken heart to say to yourself, ‘We cannot let this happen to anybody else’s child,’ ” Sybrina Fulton said.

Joey was a good kid - everybody loved him. He was smart and happy and he excelled at school. But he wasn't smart enough to choose the right friends. He loved math and would have been a good businessman, if he'd had a chance. He was close with his family - brother, sister, Aunt, Uncles, their families and his grandmother.
He loved reptiles, especially snakes and lizards - he raised 3 in his house. He also loved dogs and wanted to be a veterinarian or open a pet shop. He liked to play baseball and ride his bike. People loved him because he always liked to help others. If someone was hungry - he would run home to get food for them. He would give his own lunch away if someone else needed it. Many people took advantage of him. Unfortunately, Joey befriended Sergio Santiago.
Sergio had been homeless and had begged Joey to stay with him in his house with his Aunt Antonia. Joey watched out for Sergio and trusted him. Sergio was a bad influence, pitting Joey against family and friends. He was a small time drug dealer and he tried to get Joey to use and sell drugs, but Joey resisted.
On Saturday, March 29 Joey went for a job interview at a coffee shop. They told him to come back Monday to start working. Joey was very excited to start a job and try to turn his life around and get away from the control of Sergio. But before he could, Sergio murdered him.
The next day, Joey and Sergio were both at a friend's home in the neighborhood. Joey was sitting at the window looking outside onto Wallace Street when Sergio got up and pointed a gun at Joey's head and pulled the trigger.
The family is devastated by this terrible loss. After he died, his grandmother would go to sleep looking at his photo. The family built a gazebo as a beautiful memorial in the garden next to the house where he was killed. See less
